Serial składa się ze 100 półgodzinnych odcinków. Fabuła opiera się na młodzieńczych latach Clarka Kenta studiującego na Uniwersytecie Shustera w Siegelville (nawiązanie do twórców postaci Supermana - Joe Shustera i Jerry'ego Siegela) na Florydzie i pomagającego ludziom jako Superboy. Serial był emitowany w latach 1988-1992. Na początku trzeciej serii został przemianowany na "The Adventures of Superboy (Przygody Superboya)".
Do zaskakujących zmian doszło przed rozpoczęciem prac nad sezonem drugim. Producenci, niezadowoleni z kreacji Johna Newtona, a także w obliczu jego żądań znacznej podwyżki, zrezygnowali z jego usług na rzecz Gerarda Christophera. Także Scott Wells, odgrywający Lexa Luthora, został zmieniony przez Shermana Howarda.
Serial został zdjęty z anteny ponieważ studio Warner Brothers (posiadające prawo dotyczące bohaterów związanych z Supermenem) wniosło pozew sądowy przeciwko producentowi Ilya Salkindowi, który zdobył prawa w latach '70-tych (kiedy to nakręcił filmy o Supermenie), a w 1988 przyczynił się do nakręcenia serialu. Sprawa została rozstrzygnięta na korzyść WB, ale serial przestał być nadawany. Pierwszy sezon serialu został wydany na DVD 20 czerwca 2006 roku jako część kampanii promocyjnej "Superman Returns". Pozostałe serie, z powodu wyjątkowo skomplikowanej sytuacji prawnej, czekają na lepsze czasy.
